My ideal client is honest, open to suggestions, and willing to work collaboratively.
When beginning any project, the two most important details are the word count and the deadline. With those in hand, I will ask for a copy of all materials so I can get a feel for the scope of the project. You will then receive a complete quote, including the estimated date of completion and a simple contract. Once everything is signed and dated, I can get to work!
For manuscript editing, I use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition), Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary (online edition), and Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature (I am also experienced in Adobe Acrobat; please ask for details). All clients receive a unique style sheet upon the completion of their project.
I am based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but work with authors everywhere!
Proofreading
For completed manuscripts. Addresses the basics of spelling, punctuation, and grammar (for information on fees, please read this post).
Copy editing
Light: Includes proofreading and adds fact-checking.
Medium: Includes a light copyedit, along with a review of overall flow and continuity.
Heavy: Includes a medium copyedit and also addresses transitions, sentence structure, and possible restructuring and/or rewording.
Critique
Offers that all-important third-party perspective. Includes a thorough examination of plot, character development, conflict, continuity, show vs. tell, and readability. Does not include editing.
Developmental Editing
If you would like the opportunity to ask questions about your book specifically and the writing process in general, this is the package for you.
Round 1: After carefully reading through your manuscript, I will create a critique detailing your book’s strengths and weaknesses, offering comments on both and suggestions for the latter. You are then responsible for taking the suggestions into consideration, performing any revisions you see fit, and sending the revised work back to me, along with any questions.
Round 2: I will comb through the updated manuscript, create a new critique, and send it back to you. You then have a last chance for questions and revisions before the third and final round.
Round 3: Includes a final critique, along with a heavy edit.
Sample Edit
If you’ve never worked with an editor before or would just like a better idea of my editing style, I will perform a medium copyedit on the first 10 pages of your manuscript.
If you have other projects—large or small—not listed above, or would like to discuss pricing, please get in touch!
