You know you’ve wondered, and thanks to the Chicago Tribune, now you can be certain:

“The main thing to remember is that farther refers to physical distance. ‘Grandma’s new house is farther from us than her old house.’

Further refers to figurative distance. ‘We need to further explore the best route to Grandma’s new place.’ “
